New Valley University celebrates World Environment Day under the slogan "Ending Plastic Pollution"

Under the patronage of Professor Abdel Aziz Tantawi, President of New Valley University, and the supervision of Professor Mustafa Mahmoud, Supervisor of the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector, and in the presence of the deans of the faculties and the vice deans for community service and environmental development affairs, and with the participation of the governorate's education, youth and sports, and environmental affairs sectors, the Community Service and Development Sector at New Valley University organized a celebration of World Environment Day at the Faculty of Medicine under the slogan "Ending Plastic Pollution." This celebration is part of the celebration of World Environment Day. In a speech delivered on his behalf by Professor Dr. Abdel Aziz Tantawi, President of the University, by Professor Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, Supervisor of the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the University, who thanked the sectors that participated in the celebration, he stated that the University is keen to celebrate international occasions, especially World Environment Day, which the University organizes annually to raise awareness of the need to protect the environment in all its elements and components and prevent harm to it. He added that the United Nations has set a unified theme for World Environment Day this year, "Ending Plastic Pollution." He emphasized that the University is taking many serious steps to preserve the environment and promote community development, within the framework of the directives and initiatives of the political leadership, and to educate its staff and the surrounding community about the importance of using healthy resources to reduce pollution and coexist in a clean, healthy environment. He said that the celebration included a lecture by Dr. Rasha El Shazly entitled "How to Conquer Plastic Pollution," in which she reviewed the Ministry of Environment and the Egyptian government's efforts to participate in the global treaty to eliminate plastic pollutants. The lecture highlighted the efforts of the Egyptian Ministry of Environment in participating in putting the final touches to complete the global treaty, sponsored by the United Nations. By reducing the risk of plastic pollution, the lecturer highlighted the global trend toward extending the life cycle of plastic products, reducing reliance on single-use plastic products by 80%. This approach also highlighted the importance of encouraging the use of biodegradable plastics, which are made from plant waste and bacterial fermentation and constitute a sustainable alternative to plastic products made from petroleum derivatives. The lecture also raised awareness of the dangers posed by microplastics (micro- and nanoplastics) to human health, which have begun to appear in large quantities in human organs and can cause cancer. The lecture also highlighted Kenya's experience in recycling plastic waste and converting it into blocks used for paving streets and construction. The lecturer also called on the Environment and Community Service Sector at New Valley University to adopt this experience and implement it within the university to transform plastic waste into wealth and increase the efficiency of the plastic waste recycling process. In addition, the faculty members and faculties of the Community Service and Environmental Development Department reviewed the environmental activities organized by the colleges to activate the university's role in serving the community. Environmental development, in addition to artistic segments by the Gifted Students Team in Education, a documentary film about the university's community service and environmental development activities, and taking commemorative photos with participants in the celebration of World Environment Day at New Valley University.
